Although, in general, the knights costumes are relatively close to the time period, which in this case would be late 14th century, Shannyn Sossamon's clothes are totally modernized. According to Wikipedia, the costumes generally date to around the 15th Century. Heath Ledger's wear at the ball was nowhere near 14th century fashion. He didn't have a gown, there wasn't much decoration, jewels, or even a belt. The cutting seemed to be quite modern, and the combination of inner shirt and a outer jacket was not found in the Middle Ages. Sossamon's dresses at the competitions were sometimes quite liberal, extremely not like the relatively conservative wear the females wore at the time. In the scene where Ledger first meets Sossamon, Sossamon is wearing a modern jacket, and on the back its pretty obvious the pattern wasn't embroidered on, it was more of printed on.
