The emperor had absolute control over the economy, controlling every part of it.

Religious tensions, due to disagreements between the Byzantine emperor and the Roman popes, eventually caused the split of the Christian Church. Trade disagreements, once Western European trade revived, were bitter. Venetian merchants caused Constantinople to the looted by western crusaders.
